SIBO-SIFO | Reflux & Hyperacidity – How To Fix It !

Reflux & HyperAcidity: Image of Intestinal Villi in the small intestine

Reflux & Hyperacidity can make every meal you take a nightmare, but not any more! SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), and SIFO (Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth) can both lead to improper digestion and fermentation of food in the small intestine. The bacteria and fungi consume undigested carbohydrates and fiber, producing excessive gas as a by-product.

★ Why does SIBO and SIFO cause Reflux & Hyperacidity ?

This gas generated by the SIBO and SIFO, increases intra-abdominal pressure, forcing stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus, leading to heartburn, chest discomfort, and a burning sensation. Additionally, if stomach acid levels are too low, a condition called (hypochlorhydria), food remains in the stomach longer than it should. This delays digestion and increases the risk of bacterial overgrowth, which worsens reflux symptoms.

★ What makes Reflux & Hyperacidity Worse ?

 1.         Eating Fermentable Carbohydrates such as:

  • High-FODMAP foods, like onions, garlic, legumes, dairy, wheat, among others, feed bacteria and fungi, worsening gas production.
  • Also refined sugars, encourage fungal overgrowth, especially Candida.

 2.         Low Stomach Acid, which is a HCl Hydrochloric acid Deficiency:

  • When stomach acid is insufficient, food sits undigested, allowing bacteria to thrive and ferment.
  • Weak stomach acid, also prevents proper bile release, reducing fat digestion and further aggravating bloating and reflux.

 3.         Weak Bile Flow:

  • Bile is crucial for fat digestion and, microbial balance. Stagnant or thick bile allows bacterial overgrowth and slows digestion.
  • It is important to note that, low bile flow can be the result of:  a sluggish liver, gallbladder issues, or even inadequate fat intake.

★ How do you Fix Reflux and HyperAcidity ?

 1.         Restore Proper Digestion

  • Hydrochloric Acid in the form of Betaine HCl with Pepsin, boosts stomach acid levels, aiding digestion and preventing bacterial overgrowth.
  • Digestive Enzymes, help to break down proteins, fats, and carbs, thus reducing the undigested food available for fermentation.

 2.         Kill Off Bacteria & Fungi

  • Oregano Oil & Odor-less Garlic, are natural antimicrobial agents that naturally eliminate gas-producing bacteria and fungi.
  • Another great option is to add Clove Powder, that works to reduce fungal overgrowth and improve digestion.

 3.         Heal & Strengthen the Gut Lining

  • Butyrate a Short-Chain Fatty Acid,  reduces inflammation, promotes healthy gut barrier function, and balances the microbiome.
  • Probiotics  especially Saccharomyces Boulardii + Lactobacillus and Bifido-bacterium Strains, help to restore good bacteria, while preventing harmful overgrowth.
  • Sauerkraut, a Fermented Food, supports digestion with natural enzymes and probiotics.

 4.         Optimize Bile Flow

  • Ox Bile or Taurine,  helps with fat digestion and prevents bacterial stagnation in the small intestine.
  • Bitter Herbs such as Dandelion, Artichoke, and Milk Thistle,  stimulate bile production and liver detoxification.

It’s amazing, how by addressing these root causes, you can reduce reflux, balance stomach acid, and restore healthy digestion.
